So, the good thing is that the Seattle Mariners are doing worse this year than they did last year. You ask, how is that a good thing?
Well, the thing is, us fans don’t want to get high hopes. If we do, they are usually dashed, severely and, you know, perfect games don’t last forever … they only come 23 times every 100 years or so. We will depend on variety, newness, the unexpected … those are always good. It’s 2013, baby!
That’s what I’m saying; this will be a completely new season. I was in a groove last year, I was in a groove during Spring Training; it seemed that everything was going peachy keen. We picked up wonderful new players stacked with talent and vibrancy. However, we did lose a power punch in John Jaso and now, sorely and sadly, Casper Wells is gone. A tear. Our record is currently 6-9.
I will always remember Wells from last year, exiting on a home run, and telling postgame interviewers about the “juice” that saw him through: a yellow banana! A yellow banana, us fans do need to know stuff like that. I do want to see him dancing in front of the camera and smiling, and I will miss seeing him gun down a runner, like it ain’t no thang(!). Not many people can do that.
My whole life, I was the one with the arm. Casper Wells will be sorely missed; but, you know, he could one day come back and he will have new home runs under his belt, possibly smells of the Midwest, a family, or a corn field … hey, it could happen! To quote one of my favorite bands, the Beach Boys, God Only Knows.
As for the current Mariners roster, they are hurting. Last night, they got stomped by last year’s playoff contenders, the Detroit Tigers, and extra special, Triple Crown winner Miguel Cabrera. We unveiled a new starting pitcher in Aaron Harang and hey, he’s our new Kevin Millwood, even Jason Vargas, in my opinion. He comes to us via the Dodgers and Rockies. Of our new pitcher, Skipper Eric Wedge said that he looked pretty good, and of the team: “They’re fighting through it.” Let’s hope the Mariners can pick up some wins and more home runs!
I remember once from my days back at Evergreen Lutheran High School, a group of close guys got together and each picked a worst team in football to win the Super Bowl. Wouldn’t you know it!? Kurt Warner and the Rams won that year. $100 went to the stud who was with them from the beginning. Healthy Mariners prospect … world championship and domination, from here on out! I’m betting!
Tonight, King Felix will try to achieve his 100th win. In 3 games, his opponents hold a batting average of .241. I’m really praying that Felix will find his groove again! I think that something else that will bring a spark to the team will be Mike Zunino’s induction into the Major Leagues! He is playing so well for the Rainiers! I hope we get him up here midseason!
