Let’s be honest: Seattle’s never had a championship team and therefore never known what it feels like to be picked-through like a fruit stand at a Sunday Farmer’s Market. Our harmonious yoga-practicing team finally achieved enlightenment (or brought back the Lombardi trophy, same thing, right?), and now their perfect balance would be forever ruined!
Since Tuesday, Russell Wilson has been posting several videos to his Instagram account of he and his offense working out together, running plays, eating healthy, and occasionally taking in some fun in Southern California. Leave it to Zen Master Pete Carroll’s QB prodigy to ease our nerves about the players we lost during free agency, because they look happy, fit, relaxed, and ready to repeat.
On Wednesday, Sidney Rice confirmed via Twitter that he would be returning to the Hawks for at least one more year. Initially, I was glad to see Rice go. With his injuries, he had a less than sensational 2013 season: in the eight games he played in, Rice started six, had 15 receptions for a total of 231 yards and three touchdowns. After the departure of Golden Tate, however, the coaching staff will want another WR who already has a rapport with Wilson and understands the Seahawk philosophy. Let’s hope that Rice has the ability to stay healthy. If he does, Tate’s departure might not be so sad after all with a consistent Doug Baldwin and the impressive maturation of Jermaine Kearse last season.
As draft time approaches, Carroll and GM John Schneider already proved they know what they’re doing. Regardless of who joins the team, one of the Hawks’ best assets on and off the field is that they operate as an entire unit, working to close any gaps of weakness that may emerge. I fear that other NFL staffs will adopt our bold yet calculated method during the draft, but the chemistry that comes together under Carroll’s coaching staff simply cannot be copied.
As fans like myself still bask in that XLVIII sun, the team only looks forward to a new season and a repeat championship rather than dwelling on the past. And as the sports media waits to hand out grades on May 11th, we’ll know better than to pay much attention to that stuff anyways. #notime2sleep
