Today, Coach Steve Spurrier sat down and answered some media questions about the Gamecocks heading into “the big game.” This was streamed live on our blog by the way. If you missed it, below are some of notes from what he had to say. Note these are just a few of the many comments he made (these are words from the Ol’ Ball Coach, not mine) and if you want to read the entire transcript go HERE but again below is the cliffs notes version….
– Spurrier said his players are looking forward to playing on the big stage.
– Spurrier said Cam Newton is an exceptional athlete. He can do it all on the ground and a excellent passer.
– Spurrier said his team hasn’t paid any attention to the Cam Newton saga but he’s glad that Cam is able to play. He quoted Joe Paterno in saying that you want all the best players for the other team to be playing.
Spurrier said a conference championship is something the program has been shooting for since last summer.
– Spurrier said that Garcia is “close to 100%.”
– Spurrier said Garcia has really improved his game, especially running the football, since the Auburn game. Spurrier said we seldom get mad at Stephen anymore.
– Spurrier said Auburn’s offense is good and no defense has shut them down completely. He said they don’t have any weaknesses.
– It’s a challenge to try to do some things that have never been done before and I like that, Spurrier said. He wanted a challenge when he left the NFL ranks. The fun part is to try to do things that haven’t been done before. “We have another opportunity tomorrow. We’ll see if we can make something happen.”
– Steve Spurrier said he thinks that Cam Newton deserves the Heisman. “No question.” And he has Spurrier’s vote.
– Spurrier said proving you can win at USC has been crucial to recruiting. Got to prove you can knock down barriers.
