Here it is folks, the day you’ve all been waiting for. I bet every single one of you has been waiting on pins and needles to find out who wins the Clancy. It is awarded to the player who best exemplifies leadership qualities on and off the ice and has made a noteworthy humanitarian contribution in his community. Generally, this one goes to players who do extremely awesome philanthropy. As we aren’t exactly privy to that information (for the most part) it took on a little different flavor. And your winner is…..
WINNER: Brandon Dubinsky
AlisonL (2): “3rd in points on the team, a masterful job against Sidney Crosby in the playoffs, (while notching 6 points including the tying goal in game 4) and a commitment to speaking on behalf of the team and calling a spade a spade when the team needed some love, Dubi gets my second place vote.”
CBJProspects (1): “…”
The Coach (1): “Dubinsky does everything ‘the right way’ on the ice, so I’m just going to go ahead and assume he’s similar off the ice as well. He’s a hard worker, who does things in a way for others to look up to (at least on the ice).”
Runner Up: Jack Johnson
CBJProspects (2): “…”
The Coach (2): “With leadership covered in other awards, I wanted to focus on the community aspect of the Clancy. Johnson may have his flaws, but no player has embraced the Columbus community more than him. When a guy of Johnson’s stature comes to a team and endorses it the way he did, people notice. He was the first step towards rebuilding the image of the Blue Jackets around the league.”
Honorable Mention:
Boone Jenner
Alison L (1): “Perhaps you consider this to be from left field, but I think coming in to the league straight from juniors and almost breaking the team’s rookie point record, being best on the team – and eleventh in the League! – for +/- penalties shows a remarkable promise of leadership for the identity this team has built. He works hard, performs well, and shows incredible composure particularly with the ire his game draws from other opponents. Couple that with his dedication to the Blue Jackets Foundation and their Heroes, particularly his buddy, Maggie…and Boone definitely shows that he will be a meaningful leader for the team.”
Derek MacKenzie
AlisonL (3): “DMac is the engine behind so much of the team’s involvement in charity efforts and community service. He takes an active role in giving back and also shows the young guys / new players how things happen in Columbus in terms of building relationships with Central Ohio. He’s also an engine on the ice – a key part of the energy fourth line.”
The Coach (3): “He’s been a hard-working constant in Columbus, on and off the ice, for quite a long time now. ”
Nick Foligno
CBJProspects (3): “…”
So this turned out to be a bit of a slow week in terms of the awards handed out. Don’t worry though things pick up soon, as the Executive of the Year and Ted Lindsay (most outstanding player) Awards are up next week, followed by the Jack Adams Award (coach) and Frank J. Selke Trophy (defensive forward). See you next week!
