Florida State whittled what was an 18-point Nebraska lead down to one on Monday night before falling 70-65 at the Donald L. Tucker Center in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge.
The Seminoles slowly chipped away at what was a 37-21 halftime lead for Nebraska. Four straight points from FSU guard Aaron Thomas, who returned after missing two games, pulled Florida State to within one with over two minutes to play, but a basket by David Rivers and a triple by Tarin Smith put the game away for the Cornhuskers.
Nebraska’s dynamic duo of Terran Petteway and Shavon Shields combined for 46 of the Cornhuskers’ 70 points. Petteway scored 25 before fouling out while Shields added 21 on an efficient 8-for-13 shooting.
Xavier Rathan-Mayes was Florida State’s leading scorer for a fourth straight game, finishing with 17 points while Thomas added 11 off the bench in his return.
7’3” center Boris Bojanovsky became the first Seminole to record a double-double this season with 10 points and 10 rebounds. He added a game-high two blocks.
With the loss, Florida State fell to 3-4 on the season. The Seminoles will host UCF on Saturday. Nebraska (5-1) will not play until Sunday when its hosts in-state foe, Creighton.
