Out of respect for Bryan Murray and his family’s right to privacy, I did not want to publish anything after the Toronto Sun‘s Steve Simmons’ published a small note in his latest Sunday column that alluded to the general manager’s health.
“Best wishes to Bryan Murray who’s struggling with some health issues.”
Without knowing whether Murray gave Simmons his blessing to run with the best wishes, I simply doubted that the 72-year old Murray would want whatever health issues are affecting him to become public knowledge and serve as a distraction to him, his family and his work as general manager of the Ottawa Senators – especially since Simmons wished him well without ever giving any indication of how serious the ailment was.
In what was likely a response to Simmons’ revelation, the Senators released a statement this afternoon.
Per the press release:
OTTAWA – The Ottawa Senators announced today that General Manager and President of Hockey Operations Bryan Murray has been recently diagnosed with cancer. The Senators organization issued the following statement:
“Mr. Murray is undergoing further testing and will begin treatment immediately for this condition as prescribed by the team’s doctors in collaboration with specialists.
Mr. Murray’s treatment schedule may require him to be away from the Senators office periodically. During his periodic absence, assistant general managers Pierre Dorion and Randy Lee will be responsible for managing the Ottawa Senators hockey operations department.
On behalf of the entire Senators family, the team is asking that the thoughts, prayers and support of the entire hockey community are with Bryan and his family.
The Senators and Mr. Murray ask that you please respect his family’s privacy during this time.
There will be no further comment from the Senators organization.”
It’s simply terrible news and my thoughts and well wishes go out to the Murray family and the Senators organization.
Kick cancer’s ass Bryan!
