The tweet above came from Matthew McGreevy whose Twitter bio indicates that he’s the “Broadcaster for @SGSR_OSU and @BTN_OhioState” and the report indicates that the Senators have an interest in Ohio State University’s Drew Brevig. According to EliteProspects, Brevig is an undrafted 22-year old defenceman from Prior Lake, Minnesota who is listed at a lanky 6’2″, 188 lbs.
The Senators have a history of drafting OSU products of late and it stands to reason that they took notice of Brevig while monitoring the development of prospects like Ryan Dzingel and Max McCormick – two players who have since graduated and moved on and become professionals in Binghamton.
It’s no secret that the Senators’ pipeline could stand to use some more right shooting defencemen to complement the bevy of left shooting defencemen that the team has stockpiled over the past few years. So it stands to reason as to why the Senators would be interested in Brevig. And if having a few familiar faces in Binghamton certainly can’t hurt the recruitment process.
Brevig cannot sign until his collegiate season is over, mind you, he’s only in his sophomore year at OSU, so perhaps he could decide to remain in school and continue to develop there. Finding information or scouting reports on Brevig isn’t easy. Apparently he was a participant in the Chicago Blackhawks’ 2014 Prospect Camp, but aside from that, information on the prospect is incredibly hard to come by.
I did however also find the following quote from his NAHL head coach upon Brevig’s commitment to Ohio State:
“Drew (Brevig) is a highly talented player with huge upside,” said Blizzard Head Coach Cory Laylin. “His style and skating ability has opened a lot of eyes and as a coach and organization we are very proud of him.”
I suppose the fact that there is so little readily available information on Brevig shouldn’t really bode that well for his projection as a legitimate NHL prospect, but it’s tough to get worried about a potential collegiate free agent signing who would provide the organization with some much needed depth on defence.
So yeah, this may be something or it may turn into nothing at all.
Here are this mystery man’s career numbers to this point:
