The Ottawa Senators are getting a red heritage jersey.
On Sunday, November 12th, the Ottawa Senators tweeted a video from their official promoting their involvement in the outdoor NHL100 Classic that will take place on December 16, 2017 against the Montreal Canadiens.
Within that video, a black and white photo of the heritage sweater was repeatedly used.
A storied history.

Considering how the organization rolled out a set of black and white heritage sweaters for the inaugural Belleville Senators season and the prominent use of the white heritage jersey that the Senators wore in the team’s 2014 Heritage Classic in Vancouver in the NHL100 Classic’s promotional material, the reintroduction of a white heritage seemed like a foregone conclusion.

Not so fast.
A Twitter user named @NevillCarney stumbled upon some NHL100 Classic Senators merch online and drew attention to the introduction and use of silver ‘O’ as the Senators’ primary logo.

The Senators had never used silver as part of their colour palette before, but after Adidas Hockey tweeted out an image displaying part of the jersey that the Senators will don for the NHL100 Classic.
A century of Champions.

I’m going to have to wait until the entire jersey is officially unveiled today before passing judgment. It’s obvious that the use of silver is designed to pay homage to the ‘Silver Seven’ teams from yesteryear and the inclusion of the years in which the Senators won the Stanley Cup on the silver trim is a nice touch, but at least for me, the addition of a new colour to the Senators’ palette feels weird.
Again, maybe I’ll feel differently when I see the rest of the jersey, but it’s hard to look at the sleeve and not get a Carolina Hurricanes vibe from it.
From a marketing standpoint, going with a red jersey instead of a white actually makes a ton of sense.
If the Senators are prepared to use a set of black and white heritage designs as their primary sweaters next season, the organization can sell this red heritage version without worrying how it will affect sales on white heritage jerseys moving forward.
As much as I would have loved to see the organization return to its 1992-93 roots and reintroduce a set of the black and white 2D jerseys, I think eventually we’re going to see versions of this jersey be released semi-regularly as alternates.

After seemingly plugging every restaurant establishment along the Richmond Road/Wellington Street corridor, the letter may as well have been titled, “I will never pay for another meal in Ottawa ever again”.
- Yesterday the Senators announced that they had returned Marcus Hogberg to the ECHL and Nick Paul, Jack Rodewald and Ben Harpur to Belleville. Bobby Ryan and Mark Borowiecki were both activated off of the injured reserve and are expected to dress in Thursday night’s game against the Pittsburgh Penguins.
- Fresh off the heels of campaigning for a new arena in Calgary, NHL commissioner Gary Bettman has set his sights on Ottawa and its need for a downtown rink.
