Amidst the Rick Nash fallout from an Ottawa perspective, the Ottawa Sun‘s Bruce Garrioch had this nugget of information buried in today’s article:
Before Murray makes a move, he’d like to get confirmation from captain Daniel Alfredsson on what’s next. The super Swede has indicated he’s planning to come back and sources say the two sides are working on a one-year extension.
It’s the sort of deft manoeuvre that Garrioch alluded to in an article earlier this month. Using Ray Whitney and Martin Brodeur as examples, the simple explanation for an extension is that it would not only ensure Alfredsson doesn’t go anywhere as a UFA, the Senators could include a signing bonus so that Alfredsson gets a bump from the $1-million salary he’s supposed to collect 2012-13.
Between the talk of an extension and the fact that Alfie is working out as hard as he is in Sweden, for all intents and purposes, it certainly sounds like he’s coming back.

Now that Nash is going to the New York Rangers for Tim Erixon, a first and two potential second line players who should augment other second/third line hybrid types that the Blue Jackets are happy to horde, the focus on what the Senators are going to do now will come to the forefront.
One of the more popular suggestions out there is Bobby Ryan from the Anaheim Ducks.

Personally, I’m not sure that Ryan would necessarily have been a good fit. Don’t get me wrong, he’s an exceptionally talent player who is relatively inexpensive (cap hit of $5.1M) and productive (four straight seasons of 30+ goals). He’s the type of player who would fit in very well on the first line alongside Jason Spezza…
…But, with three years remaining on his current contract, moving a collection of young, inexpensive and NHL-ready assets for Ryan, management would essentially be starting the clock and giving itself a three year window of opportunity to win it all. Of course there is the possibility that Ryan could be re-signed, but as a young American player who already has expressed interest in playing in Philly, I just don’t like Ottawa’s chance of holding onto his rights beyond his current deal.
