Series Takeaways: MVP’s “R” Us

Everything was going so good until that Rangers series, wasn’t it. The Angels had a two game lead on the Astros, they seemingly couldn’t lose, all of my loans were getting passed. It was like living in dreamland. Then…Rangers. And then, Astros. And now, Dodgers. Losing streaks are the worst. Losing streaks are so bad that it’s hard to retrospectively respect the fact that, for the first time ever, two MVP’s from the prior year faced each other in a pitcher vs. hitter matchup. Maybe this is what I will use my new voodoo doll for that MJ Lloyd sent me the other day.

Speaking of voodoo, who is the jerk that is sending out black magic vibes to Alert Pujols? It’s not funny. Albert Pujols shouldered this team in June, now he is shouldering this team in its naughty parts. Over the last week, he has posted an OPS of .573. Not good. Over the last two week,, he has posted an OPS of .595. Still not good. Over the last month, .665. Ugh. For the balance of the season, his OPS is at a respectable .852, but that is not exactly seeing the forest for the trees.

Marquee Matchup

It was all the rave coming into Saturday, it was primetime television, it was Clayton Kershaw vs. Mike Trout. And, Trout lost. But, on a positive note, I think that I am pregnant:

I’ll be happy to let everyone know the sex of the baby when I find out. I’m really excited.

To be honest, if Trout is going to lose a duel to anyone, losing to Clayton Kershaw is at least easy to stomach. However, going 0-5 in a series finale that was started by Mat Latos and his stupid first name, not so much.

Calhooooooooooun

Kole Calhoun this series went 5-8 with a walk, a double, a dinger, one run batted in and four runs scored. For some reason, Mike Scioscia felt that it was necessary to sit Kole against Kershaw. Which makes sense. At least it makes sense until you see that David Dejesus was in the lineup that day. Platooning is great, Scioscia. But it only works if you platoon correctly.

The Angels are back home tonight with the Cleveland Indians coming to town, and are now four games back of the Astros. Doctors orders: get back to winning.
