Credit where credit is due.
Tim McKernan put into words the problem with the Mike Matheny era very succinctly with his post today on the NLCS GM 3 debacle Tuesday afternoon:
The two World Series Tony La Russa won in St. Louis, he managed the teams like a gangster. In 2006, he benched Scott Rolen. It was unpopular, and as Jim Edmonds said on CBS Sports 920 last year, it almost led to a revolt…but Rolen was a mess in the NLCS. In 2011, he pulled starters who were dicking around so damn quickly—after the Jaime Garcia Debacle in Game 3 of the 2011 NLDS—that their heads were snapping from the sociopathic hook. Business…never personal.
Perfect.
Business… never personal. With Matheny, it’s always personal. He uses his position to fight for his guys. And while admirable to a point, he’s ended up detracting value from the Cardinals postseason runs instead of adding.
People are noticing.
Like Seth Maness’ girlfriend. Who RT’d some Tweets wondering aloud just what the skip was doing in the 10th inning:
That’s courtesy of Cards Conclave.
And while Seth and her probably didn’t have the most fun Facetime last night after the game, I’m encouraging FS1 to bring her on board for the rest of the NLCS to give the fan perspective of these games.
Keep fighting the good fight, Ms. Cox. We support your candor during these difficult times.
