Singer Sevyn Streeter was supposed to sing the national anthem before the Sixers’ opening game of the season against the Thunder, but things didn’t work out that way.
Streeter wore a “We matter” jersey beforehand, and she claims the team asked her not to sing because of it.

The Sixers released a statement on the issue, but didn’t reveal much.
“The Philadelphia 76ers organization encourages meaningful actions to drive social change. We use our games to bring people together, to build trust and to strengthen our communities. As we move from symbolic gestures to action, we will continue to leverage our platform to positively impact our community.”
The team reserves the right to do what they want, and were certainly within their right to ask her not to sing. If they don’t want a certain message to be sent, then they’ll act appropriately.
