In an otherwise ugly game by both the Raiders and Chiefs, it came down to one play at the end of regulation. The Chiefs had driven deep into Raider territory and looked to put the game away. But Richard Seymour saved the day.
The score was tied at 13-13 and the Chiefs got the ball with just :16 seconds left in the game. The drive started at the 33 yard line which meant the Chiefs would need just 27 yards to get into field goal range for Ryan Succop. They picked up nearly that entire yardage in one play when Kyle Orton connected with Dwayne Bowe for 25 yards. Then one more 11 yard completion to Terrence Copper and the Chiefs were set up to win the game.
Succop would enter the game to attempt a 49 yard field goal that would put the game away. But on the kick, Richard Seymour leapt up to get his hand on the ball and block it to send the game to overtime. It was Seymour’s second blocked field goal of the game.
In overtime, the Raiders drove down the field thanks to a 57 yard completion from Carson Palmer to Darrius Heyward-Bey. Then on third down, Sebastian Janikowski put through the 36 yard field goal to give the Raiders the improbable victory.
It keeps the Raiders very much alive in the playoff race. The Chiefs are now no longer a threat in the AFC West as it knocks them out of contention. The Broncos lost today which puts them tied with the Raiders atop the AFC West.
The Bengals beat the Cardinals today to stay ahead of the AFC West wildcard race, which means that without the win today, the Raiders would have no chance at the wildcard.
