Incoming Bearcat freshman Shaq Thomas and 5 other NIA prep athletes were denied eligibility today, according to Zags Blog. NIA prep spokesman Alif Muhammad said that all six are appealing. This quote is rather odd:
Muhammad said the NCAA had “accepted their high school diplomas from me,” but not the “classes they were taking toward their diplomas.”
“It’s awkward but that’s how it is.”
We heard reports a couple weeks ago that Thomas was sent back to New Jersey to finish up online classes. Apparently there was more to it than that. The NCAA should hear his appeal before UC starts classes.
The school has been under fire before this story broke, as a rumored diploma mill. Hopefully things work out for Shaq Thomas so he can play this season.
