The Sacramento Kings have announced that former NBA All-Star and current Director of Player Personnel Shareef Abdur-Rahim has been named the General Manager of the Reno Bighorns, the team’s NBA D-League affiliate. Abdur-Rahim will oversee basketball operations for the Bighorns, in addition to his role with the Kings.
In July, the Kings entered into an exclusive “hybrid affiliation” with the Bighorns. The Kings will pay for and operate the basketball side of the team, while local Reno ownership retains control of the business side of the club. Adding Abdur-Rahim as the GM furthers the synergy between the two teams.
“We see it as a tremendous tool to help develop talent,” Abdur-Rahim said of the Kings new relationship with the Bighorns on last weeks Cowbell Kingdom podcast.
“In the past, where we shared the team with two or three other teams, it was really hard to make sure that when you sent a guy down, that things we needed him to work on, he was working on,” Abdur-Rahim added.
In addition to Abdur-Rahim, the Kings have named Chris Gilbert Assistant General Manager of the Bighorns. Gilbert joined Pete D’Alessandro’s staff earlier this summer as Kings Basketball Operations Coordinator after spending the previous eight season with the Golden State Warriors front office.
