Once upon a time, Albert Haynesworth clogged the middle of the Tennessee Titans’ defense, wreaking havoc with his ability to stop the run while also chasing down opposing quarterbacks.
Since his departure, the Titans have failed to replace “Fat Albert’s” bulky presence. Heading into the offseason, acquiring the services of a wide body at DT was definitely on the team’s to-do list.
Yesterday, the Cleveland Browns released Shaun Rogers, a 6’4″, 350 pound behemoth who will now be available to any and everyone once free agency begins. Considering the team’s need for some beef at the DT position, should Rogers be on the Titans’ radar?
When healthy and motivated, Shaun Rogers is easily one of the most dominating defensive tackles in the game. He’s adept at stopping the run and similar to Albert Haynesworth, is also capable of sacking quarterbacks.
As of late, injuries have played a key part in Rogers’ statistical decline over the last couple of seasons. After totalling 11.5 sacks in 2007-08 combined, he’s only notched four sacks during his last two seasons, while missing six games due to injury.
On the cusp of turning 32 next month, there’s some who may question how much Rogers has left in the tank. A few character issues have also contributed to many souring on his ability to be a viable contributor, despite his impressive physical talents.
For the right price, I’d have no problem with the Titans taking a flyer on Rogers. His physical stature is exactly what the team needs and for the icing on the cake, he’s also a more-than-serviceable pass rusher. He would have been a perfect reclamation project for Jim Washburn but unfortunately, if those two pair up, it will be in Philadelphia instead of Tennessee, thanks to Wash’s recent departure.
Your turn, audience…Yea or Nay: Should the Titans consider signing Shaun Rogers?
