Ben Sheets again showed why he is going to make a lot of money at the end of this season. Sheets was one out away from his third complete game of the season before his lone walk of the night got him lifted. Sheets went 8 2/3 innings and struck out five. He allowed seven hits and only one run in the Brewers 4-1 win over the Astros Saturday night. Sheets improved to 6-1 with the victory.
The Astros got on the board first when they scored in the third inning. After Ty Wigginton doubled to center, Darin Erstad drove him in on a single to center.
The Brewers offense kicked it into gear in the fifth inning. Rickie Weeks doubled and then scored on a Ryan Braun single to tie the game. Prince Fielder wasted no time in giving the Brewers the lead when he followed up Braun’s hit with his eighth home run of the season. The two-run shot gave the Brewers a 3-1 lead.
Russell Branyan added an insurance run for the team in the sixth with his second home run of the season. The 460-foot shot tied Branyan with himself for third all-time on the longest home runs in Miller Park history. Branyan also owns the longest shot with a 480-foot blast off Greg Maddux.
Ned Yost pulled Sheets after the walk to Lance Berkman in the ninth, but Salomon Torres came on and got the save after only two pitches when Carlos Lee flew out to Mike Cameron in center to end the game. The save was Torres’ fifth on the season.
The Brewers have now one six of eight games and look to be hitting their stride. They have already won the series with the Astros and will go for the sweep on Sunday, when Dave Bush will face Shawn Chacon.
