The Brewers won their third game in a row on Wednesday night and Ben Sheets improved his season record to 8-1 after the Brewers held on for a 5-4 win over the Blue Jays at Miller Park.
Sheets continues his push for what will surely be a big contract in the offseason. He went six innings and struck out five while only giving up two runs to the Jays on four hits. His four walks are a slight cause for concern until you realize that home plate umpire Sam Holbrook had a tight zone on everyone.
Salmon Torres had to come on and pitch 1 1/3 innings to record his ninth save of the season due to the trouble Guillermo Mota got into. It was another bad outing for Mota and we’re starting to see too many of those from him lately.
Craig Counsell, Corey Hart and Jason Kendall all had multiple hit games for the Crew. Hart was moved back down to his customary fifth spot in the order and paid immediate dividends. He knocked in the eventual game-winning run in the seventh inning after Ryan Braun and Prince Fielder each struck out and failed to plate a run.
Russell Branyan hit his ninth home run on the season. Branyan is almost laughable at the moment with just how well he is playing. Mike Cameron also homered, his 11th on the season.
JJ Hardy returned to the line-up as well and went 1-4 with a walk. Hardy also made several nice defensive plays including the start of the game-ending double play.
It may be too early for the team to scoreboard watch, but it is never too early to do so here at the Brewers Bar. With the Brewers’ win and a loss by the Cubs and the Cardinals, the Brewers are now 6.5 games behind the Cubs for the division lead and only 3 games in back of the Cardinals for the Wild Card. The weather is heating up and so are the Brewers!
The team goes for the sweep against the Jays on Thursday when Dave Bush takes the mound against AJ Burnett.
