Hey, Tony! You like apples? Well, how ’bout dem apples! Ben Sheets showed (again) that he deserves to join Jake Peavy, Brad Penny, and John Smoltz as the NL starters, and fellow Brewers Prince Fielder and Francisco Cordero at the ASG, hurling 124 pitches Saturday to beat the Cubs 13-4. While the pitch count of 124 won’t impress Tony La Russa, the fact that 89 of those pitches were for strikes just might…or that Sheets fanned 11, only walked 1, and only allowed 6 hits over 8 IP on the road versus a division rival just might, too. Of course, given a 4-0 lead before starting the first, and a 9-2 lead before starting the third never hurts–the Crew pounded out 15 hits off the Cubs’ staff on Saturday before FOX viewers; Ryan Braun led the way with a 4-for-5 day, scoring 3 and driving in 4. The Crew tries to take the rubber match Sunday afternoon, sending Dave Bush to square off against Jason Marquis…good thing Sheets only needed one inning of relief on Saturday, meaning Yost can go to his ‘pen early if needed…hint, hint.
