Should Sean McVay or Matt LaFleur Call LA Rams Plays?

NFL: Atlanta Falcons at Tampa Bay Buccaneers

<![CDATA[Despite his age, Los Angeles Rams rookie head coach Sean McVay appears comfortable in his new role.

But with all the things that the 31-year-old McVay has yet to learn about being an NFL head coach, is he taking on too much by being responsible for calling the plays for the Rams offense in 2017?

He had the look of a savvy veteran during a news conference at the NFL Scouting Combine on Thursday, ESPN.com reported.

That doesn’t mean that the learning curve still isn’t incredibly high for the man pegged to return the Los Angeles franchise to prominence after a 14-year drought.

A St. Louis Post-Dispatch report said as much:

But the Rams’ first-year head coach already is feeling that most unique of NFL experiences _ getting pulled in several directions.

“You’re sitting there meeting with somebody about signs in the building,” McVay said. “Office furniture for the coaches.”

Office furniture?

“It’s surprising, right?” said McVay, 31. “You would never think that. . . .There’s just a lot of different things, that until you get in that chair you don’t appreciate. But I think the biggest thing is just maximizing your time, being able to prioritize what’s important right now.”

Part of McVay’s decision could be tied in the fact that new offensive coordinator Matt LaFleur has not called the offense during his NFL coaching career. Serving as offensive coordinator is a promotion from his role as quarterbacks coach with the Atlanta Falcons last season.

Former Falcons offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan, LaFleur’s supervisor last season, believes play-calling already is in LaFleur’s wheel house.

“Yeah,” Shanahan told ESPN.com at the scouting combine, “he’s been ready for a while.

“They’re getting a hell of a coach. … Matt understands the game. He played college quarterback. He knows a lot about that position. He knows the run game, he knows the pass game, he knows how to tie them together.”

If McVay wants a more supervisory role, it’s good to know he can hand off the play-calling to LaFleur. It just might help in the development of quarterback Jared Goff’s career because the second-year player likely will spend more time with LaFleur and have better insight to what the coach is thinking or wants.]]>
