The Brewers started the second series of their road-trip out on the right foot, building a lead over the Phillies at Citizens Bank Park Monday evening, 6-2…through the first 7 innings.
Dave Bush squared off against veteran hurler Jamie Moyer…the Brewers’ got things started in the top of the 2nd, as catcher Johnny Estrada hit a solo shot to put the Crew up 1-0. The Phils countered with a Pat Burrell 2-run shot in the 4th, quickly offset by J.J. Hardy’s 3-run shot in the 5th to put the Crew up 4-2; the Brewers built on the lead with two more runs in the top of the 7th. Starter Dave Bush, stung by a line drive in the 3rd, needed relief in the 6th, and Matt Wise came in and shut down the Phils through the 7th.
But veteran lefty Brian Shouse was called upon in the 8th, and the Phils’ bats came alive–both centerfielder Aaron Rowland and rightfielder Shane Victorino got a single and double, respectively; Derrick Turnbow came in, and faired no better–first walking Jimmy Rollins to load the bases, then throwing a wild pitch to Chase Utley, that plated Rowland and advanced the Victorino and Rollins. Utley then got one he liked, and hit an RBI single to cut the lead to 6-5. Turnbow got Pat Burrell to fly out to right, but then served up singles to Greg Dobbs and Abraham Nuñez, to load the bases for Carlos Ruiz…Ruiz’s fielder’s choice to Prince Fielder resulted in the first out, but also the tying run. Former Brewer Wes Helms then delivered a pinch-hit single to plate Dobbs, before Rowland hit a sac fly his second time up in the inning to bring home Nuñez and give the Phils an 8-6 lead. Turnbow surrendered 4 ER in just 0.67 IP. The Crew sent Weeks, Hardy, and Fielder out against closer Brett Myers, but went down 1-2-3.
The loss puts the Brewers’ road record at just 9-8, hinting at a potential chink in the Brewers’ armor. Claudio Vargas (3-0, 2.65) will try to right the ship tomorrow evening against Adam Eaton (3-3, 7.43).
