Sights & Sounds From Warriors Practice – Reset vs Rockets, Can Patrick Beverley (Or Anyone) Be A Problem For Stephen Curry?

Mike-Johnson

WARRIORS PRACTICE FACILITY, OAKLAND, CA — Through the media availability of Steve Kerr, Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson, it was clear that the Golden State Warriors had put the record-breaking 73-win season behind them and hit the proverbial reset button for the playoffs.

“We know the regular season doesn’t mean anything at this point,” Curry told reporters after practice yesterday.

Sure, Thompson stated bluntly that Houston Rockets point guard Patrick Beverley had no chance of guarding Curry, but that was more just being in awe of Curry’s greatness this year.

“I’m amazed by Steph,“ said Thompson three nights ago on Wednesday after Curry ended the season with 402 three-pointers, “Man, that’s hard to do. People don’t realize it. He makes it look so easy.“

When asked yesterday after practice by ESPN’s Marc Stein if Beverley “can be a problem” for Curry, Thompson stopped that discussion coldly.

“No,” said Thompson. “I don’t think anyone can, to be honest.“

He even pondered some more.

“Ummmm… No.“

When asked about it, Beverley replied after the Rockets’ practice at Oracle Arena yesterday, “He’s been right all year.”

“He’s relentless,” said Curry. “You can’t really dance with (the ball) too much.”

Curry’s known Beverley for quite some time now, even having been roommates in the past. As Jonathan Feigen wrote for the Houston Chronicle:

“We were roommates, Paul Pierce Camp roommates, LeBron James Camp roommates,” Beverley said of his long friendship with the Warriors’ star. “Me, him and Mike Beasley played together Under-19, traveled the circuit together, trained with the same people a couple years ago.”

Despite Thompson putting Curry on his rightful pedestal, knocking Beverley out of the way in doing so, Kerr indicated being fully cognizant of the pesky point guard’s presence in this playoffs, as he was injured in last year’s Western Conference Finals, which of course the Warriors won, four games to one.

Notes

  • Curry missed a shot from a chair outside the boundary of the practice court, foiling CSN Bay Area’s Monte Poole‘s attempt for an assist. It should be noted that Poole, corralling a loose ball, fed Curry a perfect bounce pass.
  • According to assistant coach Bruce Fraser, Curry made 89 of 100 threes to close out his workout, capped by a dunk: [youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qJ954NLwSus&w=420&h=315]
  • More major themes: The Warriors sticking to their system of ball movement and limiting turnovers against the Rockets’ gambling defense, Thompson’s defense of James Harden as well as in a broader sense.
