Sights & Sounds from Pittsburgh Pirates Spring Training – Cole gearing up

Each day during spring training for the Pittsburgh Pirates, Pirates Breakdown will give you game recaps, news updates, and video of player and coach interviews, highlights, and more from the day.

Opening Day is only six days away, but the Pirates still have business to take care of this spring. The team still has to narrow down its roster, and a few players are battling hard for one of the final spots on the team. As a whole, the Pirates haven’t been exciting this spring to say the least. Today they fell to the Twins 6-4 and now sit at the bottom of the Grapefruit League with a 7-19 record. But keep your heads up Bucco fans, as the World Series favorite Chicago Cubs sit at 8-17, so don’t fret!

Gerrit Cole got the start today as he hopes to be healthy enough to not get his first start skipped in the opening week. He was okay on the day, giving up eight hits but only allowing two runs. He also struck out four and only walked one. The Pirates also sent out four relievers that aren’t expected to make the team in Montana DuRapau, Dovydas Neverauskas, Trey Haley, and Curtis Partch.

On the offensive side, Matt Joyce had another good day as he went 2-2 with a solo home run and an RBI double. His good games seem to come randomly, as he’s had a rough spring overall and even has a chance to be traded before spring ends. Michael Morse was 2-3 as he raised his spring average to .375. His role with the team as the season moves along will be interesting to say the least.

Unfortunately we don’t have video available to us today, but, as always, here are some select tweets from the day to keep all of you updated.
