Another quick update on the state of Ohio State football, following media access on Monday. Huge thanks to our friend Josh Winslow for the photos!
- Injury Updates- Jacoby Boren practiced today, but no contact. Jordan Hall and Nate Williams were also present, but doing work on the side of the field. Coach Meyer commented that they were right on schedule in terms of rehab. Josh Perry tweaked a hamstring and spent time with the medical staff
- Doghouse Update- Brionte Dunn practiced, and Coach Meyer said that they were waiting to see how the legal process concluded before making final decisions regarding any punishment. Also, Jake Stoneburner and Jack Mewhort went with the #1 team- Meyer characterized them as “good kids, but stupid.” They will be on scholarship beginning fall semester.
- MIA- Curtis Grant missed practice, as did Verlon Reed and Pat Elflein. Grant was home in Virginia with his grandfather, who has been ill. No notes on Reed or Ellfein at this time, although Patrick had a cyst removed recently
- Playmakers- Smith and Spencer were highlighted by Coach Meyer for the work that they did and for how well they looked in today’s practice. In addition, Braxton hit Stoneburner for a 70 yard score during the scrimmage portion of Monday’s workout. He’s been working with the wideouts quite a bit during camp thus far.
- Multi Media- Coach Meyer was miked up for the upcoming ESPN feature, and Garret Goebel was wearing a GoPro camera for a good portion of today’s drills.
- Large, Large Men- The report from everyone who was there commented on how stacked Ohio State’s defensive front will be for the near future. Bennett, Hankins, Goebel, and Simon were the first team, but the “quality” did not go down from there. Steve Miller continues to impress early on.
- Speaking of which- 2013 recruit Marcus Baugh was at practice, and all reports indicate that a) he is having an amazing visit to his future home and b) he too is an enormous individual.
- So much for the press buffet- Former Kansas coach and current large individual Mark Mangino was at practice this afternoon; Buckeye coach Ed Warriner was his OC while at Kansas, and he’s friends with Coach Meyer. It’s my understanding that he was at the Bengals camp over the weekend as well- you may remember that he has Youngstown roots.
- By Committee? Hyde, Smith, Dunn, Ball was the rotation for most of the day today, although that obviously might change once pads are on.
- Plus two- If the coaches asked for ten yards of effort, Coach Meyer wanted twelve, as kind of a “go through the whistle” type of situation. Even in shorts and shells, they’re “going to go really, really hard”.
- Unity- After a few days on their own, the freshmen are now practicing with the veterans- They can be identified by the black stripe on their helmets. It’s my understanding that, while at Florida, Coach Meyer had his first year students “earn” the right to remove the stripe. In terms of production, Jamaal Marcus received raves from Urban, who commented that the youngster may not know which was was up, but he’d run through anyone to get from point A to point B. Freshman Taylor Decker worked in with the #2 offense today.
