Eugenio Suarez, Cincinnati Reds
Suarez is another one of those 10 sluggers who have hit 30-plus homers with about a month-and-a-half left to go. He’s only a handful of dingers away from setting yet another single-season career high in that department, but his overall numbers at the moment have taken a step back from last year’s breakout.
After posting a 135 wRC+ and 3.9 fWAR with 34 homers and 104 RBI through 606 plate appearances, those numbers down at 117, 2.2, 30, and 72 through 469 trips to the plate. Most of that has come from an average first half (105 wRC+) before catching fire following the All-Star break (159 wRC+).
Suarez’s ISO has jumped from .236 to .379 because of a simple change in his batted-ball profile. Sure, a drop in hard-hit rate from 50.0% to 37.9% doesn’t look great, but that’s plenty of hard contact when looking at the batted-ball events he’s produced.
This is a good explainer as to how he’s already slugged 10 homers in just 104 second-half plate appearances.
