Six MLB players who easily outperformed preseason expectations

MLB: Cincinnati Reds at Chicago Cubs

DJ LeMahieu, New York Yankees

Projected fWAR: 1.9

Current fWAR: 5.4

Up until 2019, it didn’t matter how much success DJ LeMahieu enjoyed because there would always be at least a few people pointing to Coors Field as a reason why. Yankee Stadium isn’t a pitcher-friendly park, but he’s silenced some doubters this season.

Through 635 plate appearances, the infielder has slashed an impressive .329/.377/.523 with career highs in home runs (26), runs scored (108), RBI (99), and fWAR (5.4). His 137 wRC+ is also tracking toward being added to this group.

While his 40.8% hard-hit rate is on pace to be a personal best and has risen for the second straight year, his line-drive rate has also trended back upward to 23.6%. It is worth noting, though, that 19 of his 26 homers have indeed come in the Bronx. So he’s at least still taking advantage of the environment at his home ballpark.
