Sixers claim Thomas Robinson off of waivers, release Tim Frazier

Portland Trail Blazers v Denver Nuggets

Philadelphia 76ers GM Sam Hinkie is not done making moves yet as he is still trying to find the right pieces for this team going into the future. Today, he has taken another step in doing that. The team announced that they have claimed forward Thomas Robinson off of waivers and in a related move released point guard Tim Frazier from his second 10-day contract.

Despite playing well, Frazier became inexpensive as the team signed point guard Ish Smith before Sunday’s game against the Orlando Magic. With the Sixers claiming Robinson, they get a guy who has bounced around the NBA in his short three-year career.

Robinson was drafted fifth overall by the Sacramento Kings in the 2012 NBA Draft but never reached his full potential there. In his rookie season with the Kings, he averaged 4.8 points, 4.7 rebounds, and 0.4 blocks in 51 games before being dealt to the Houston Rockets. With the Rockets, his lack of production was still there as he was fighting for minutes.

Then finally, he spent the last two seasons with the Portland Trailblazers and slowly started to figure out his game. In two seasons with Portland, he averaged 4.5 points and 4.3 rebounds in 12.4 minutes per game as a rotation guy on a playoff team.

Now, he is getting a chance to play with the Sixers, who are trying out players at this point to see who will fit and not fit going forward. This is an excellent opportunity as he is a solid rebounder but needs to work on his offensive game, in which the Sixers coaching staff has done a great job with Nerlens Noel, Henry Sims, and rookie Joel Embiid.
