But exactly what we at Hog Heaven expected. Coming off the bye, the Redskins dominated the game from the get go, and although it took awhile for the scoreboard to represent just how dominant this performance was, the scoreboard at FedEx Field showed 34-3 at the end, and that does do the Redskins’ performance justice.
The Redskins and Lions tied turnover battle, many times getting near turnovers. Late in the first half, Fred Smoot and Phillip Daniels combined to strip Tatum Bell of the football, but Rocky McIntosh’s hand was out of bounds as he tried to recover the ball. Just a minute later, Marcus Washington stripped Jon Kitna of the ball, but Demetic Evans could not recover.
Redskins offensive players also put the ball on the ground a total of three times, Clinton Portis was guilty of two, Thrash the other. Luckily, the Redskins covered two of those fumbles. The one turnover the Redskins forced came in garbage time as Carlos Rogers picked off Kitna, and not only did not drop it, but scored the first TD of his career.
Jason Campbell had an outstanding day and was 23-29 on the day, averaging more than eight and a half yards per attempt.
The Lions shut down the Redskins running game most of the day with their 8 in the box scheme. The Lions had no solution for Mike Sellers, however, who scored both on the ground and in the air. Chris Cooley found the end zone twice, once for a touchdown, the other on a successful 2 point conversion attempt. Antwaan Randle El had a career day, going for 100 yards on 7 catches, all without playing in the second half. Keenan McCardell caught two balls in his first day on the job. Even Brandon Lloyd contributed, not only catching a pass, but actually running for 9 yards with it.
Next week, the Redskins go to Green Bay who is currently undefeated, pending the result of tonights game.
