The NBA today announced a $15,000 fine for Marcus Smart due to an obscene gesture.
Boston Celtics guard Marcus Smart has been fined $15,000 for making an obscene gesture, it was announced today by Kiki VanDeWeghe, Executive Vice President, Basketball Operations.
The incident occurred with 1:49 remaining in the third quarter of the Celtics’ 105-104 win over the New York Knicks on March 4 at TD Garden.
The 1:49 mark in the third quarter was when Smart got his tech after being called for a dubious offensive foul while tangling with Jose Calderon for position. I wondered why he got the tech during the game because it looked like he was just having a conversation with the official.

That’s an expensive crotch-grab.
We discussed this at length in the latest Rainin’ J’s podcast, but Smart needs to be better about this or he risks getting refs on his bad side for a long time. Refs need to be better at reffin’… but grabbing your nuts when they screw up probably isn’t the way to get them to realize the error of their ways.
