Smith Comes Up Short in Pharr

Following Dallas-based boxer Larry Smith can cause you to age prematurely.  On one hand, Smith is one of the most talented fighters in the region.  His amateur accomplishments notwithstanding, Smith has the skill, power, and temperament to go “Beast Mode” on any given fight.  However, all this talent and skill have not exactly transitioned smoothly to the pro ranks.  To put it more specifically, Smith has a nasty tendency to get gassed toward the end of fights.  For a fighter who comes in to each fight seemingly in peak shape the arm chair trainer in me might suggest that Smith’s desire to “fight anyone, anywhere” mentality may be harming him by taking fights on short notice.

This seemed to be the case on Friday night at Smith dropped a close decision loss to San Antonio’s Jorge Suarez at the Events Center in Pharr, TX.  The scores were 58-54, 57-55, and 57-55 all in favor of Suarez.

With the win Suarez remains undefeated at 5-0 as Smith drops to 10-7.
