It would be really easy to talk about how “Saturday Night Live” has lost its edge, but every so often, the show stumbles upon a little gem that hits the mark.
Buried late in Saturday’s show was the recurring sketch “Cinema Classics” in which Kenan Thompson’s Reese De’What introduces the audience to the forgotten (fictional) movie “Their Own League”. Basically, it was a parody of the “girls can’t play ball” scene in “A League of Their Own”, but this time…it faced racial discrimination and led to the best line of the night.
“Here’s the thing,” Kate McKinnon’s Rockford Peach said, “while our husbands are away, we’re the racists.”
Well played.
Oh, and an astute viewer will notice that the character Taraji P. Henson played was dressed exactly like a certain someone from the movie it was spoofing.
Now…watch the sketch and compare.
