Some tardy thoughts and links about the MSU-Michigan game and other related stuff:
I really don’t know what to say about Tuesday’s battle. Sure, it was a pretty interesting game for the most part, but was it really entertaining, riveting, sweaty palm inducing? Well, it sure wasn’t well played. Between all the missed shots (many were Marilyn Manson ugly) on Michigan’s end and all of the unforced miscues on State’s end, the game wasn’t that crisp. It was ok. Nothing spectacular. Of course, not many games are when the point total fails to eclipse a buck twenty. I rest my case.
I think some folks are giving Michigan way to much credit for keeping the game close. State’s mistakes mostly stemmed from just maddeningly careless passes and out of control play, not exactly surprising coming from this team, but worth mentioning nonetheless. On offense Michigan sans DeShawn shot the ball woefully. The shot selection was very shoddy at times to say the least. A positive on offense was the only four, count em’ four, turnovers. But there’s a very legit reason why the number was so low: the perimeter passing carousel and lack of any kind of penetration. It’s easy to not turn it over when you don’t take any chances just like it’s easy to avoid interceptions when you keep the ball on the ground.
Playing defense against Michigan is just too easy, especially if you have some strong bigs to combat DeShawn down low. Because if you can make things tough for DeShawn chances are the threes are gonna be a flying (and Manny isolations too) and it’s clear that all the perimeter shooting problems this team is experiencing is a pattern and not a fluke. Twenty games in and they still can’t hit the broadside of a barn. Things are not going to change except for the random fluke game where they’ll drain 30% of their treys. Yeah, 30% would be considered successful.
And no, there was no foul on that final play. They let the boys play the whole night and the no call was the right call.
