JOHANNESBURG – South African international, Senzo Meyiwa was fatally shot when armed men broke into the house where he was staying, police said.
The South African goalkeeper was fatally shot around 8 pm local time according to sources. “There was an altercation. Senzo Meyiwa was shot,” the official South African police Twitter account said. The shooting happened after several men entered a house in the Vosloorus township near Johannesburg.
The incident reportedly happened at Meyiwa’s girlfriend’s house in Vosloorus, south of Johannesburg. The 27-year-old played for the Orlando Pirates a soccer club based out of Parktown, Johannesburg which plays in the Premier Soccer League.
On Saturday, Meyiwa was in action for his club, when they progressed to the semi-finals of the South African League Cup beating Ajax Cape Town 4-1. Currently there is a reward offered by the South African National Police Force for the capture of the suspects involved.
In a statement, the South African Police Service said two men had entered the house, around 8 pm, while a third man remained outside. All three fled after shots were fired, in what local media reports say was an attempted burglary.
A reward of about $14,000 has been offered for information leading to the suspects’ arrest.
Irvin Khoza, Chairman of the Orlando Pirates made a statement saying: “This is a sad loss whichever way you look at it — to Senzo’s family, his extended family, Orlando Pirates and to the nation,” Pirates chairman Irvin Khoza said.
South African soccer club, Orlando Pirates said in a statement that it “has learned with sadness about the untimely death of our number one goalkeeper and current captain Senzo Meyiwa.”
Meyiwa has been awarded 6 international caps with the South African National Team but never had the opportunity to play in any big competitions aside from the African Cup of Nations.
