The best part about this post is that, in 5 1/2 hours, we will be able to see how wrong it all is. I’m not going to pick the entire field of 68 because that would be arduous. Instead, I am going to make a few predictions for the bracket.
The big question, locally, is whether or not the Gophers will get in. I think they will, as an 11 seed, playing Creighton. They may be a 10 seed as well, but I think the Big 10 will get 2 teams on the 2 seed line so there won’t be as many spots available to slot them as a 10.
The one seeds will be Miami, Indiana, Louisville and Kansas (in no particular order) and Gonzaga fans will be outraged. (2 seeds will be Gonzaga, Duke, Ohio State and Michigan St.).
This year, also, we will see a correction to the recent trend of overseeding the Big East. Georgetown may be good, but they were good against a conference that has really struggled in the tournament the last few years. This will be discussed at length when the brackets are released. Certain people will be outraged. Don’t listen to them.
The Big Ten will be rewarded with a bonus 8th team in the dance. Congratulations, Iowa! Also, Villanova will be bumped out to the chagrin of many.
After seeing the success of the mid majors in recent years, the last 4 in will be given almost exclusively to smaller conference teams. This is bad news for the SEC, who will get only Mississippi, Missouri and Florida.
The mid-majors that will get bids? Well, the games in Dayton, anyways? Boise State vs. Middle Tennessee State and La Salle vs Iowa.
What do you think? This is a time where I don’t care if my predictions are right out wrong, because the tournament is going to be played regardless. Whatever happens, it’s going to be a blast.
