There is growing chatter that two current South Carolina football coaches are on the short list of replacements for the Coastal Carolina job that opened up when David Bennett was fired by the Chanticleers late last week.
The two current USC coaches targeted are Steve Spurrier Jr. and Shawn Elliott.
Some on the Gamecock messages boards, of both TheBigSpur.com and GamecockAnthem.com, are hearing a rumor that Spurrier Jr. has accepted the job and the press conference is taking place in a matter of days. I am not too sure about that one but it is a growing rumor so felt it was worth passing along as the saying goes “where there is smoke, there is a fire.”
Losing either one of them will be a blow to what Spurrier is building as his son is the receivers coach and recruiting coordinator, whereas Elliott is the USC offensive line coach and running game coordinator. As you can see, both are crucial positions and if one comes open it would be painful until filled with the right person.
As for now, this is something to watch and with all the coaching changes occuring, combined with USC’s success of late, it is no wonder the coaches at South Carolina are appearing on short lists.
This will not be the last time either a coach is rumored to leave or actually leaves (like Jay Graham). The only hope is they leave the program in better shape than which found and the next coach continues to build the program into a SEC championship contender.
