The South Carolina Gamecocks (5-2, 3-2 SEC) snapped a seven-game SEC road losing streak by defeating the Vanderbilt Commodores by the score of 21-7. For Carolina, it was not the prettiest of wins but it is a win, on the road, in the SEC.
The first half had its share of struggles as it seemed the Gamecocks had no urgency in their play but after halftime the attitude seemed better thus a win occurred.
The Gamecocks had just 10 yards on the ground in the first half, but finished with 129 behind Brian Maddox’s 146-yard night. After watching Kenny Miles play, well now it is more understood where he has been lately. Good to see Maddox have a good night running as it seems he is now the solid number two back for USC.
What can you say with Gurley, Alshon and Garcia. Stephen threw for 355 yards, Jeffery (nine catches, 158 yards) and Tori Gurley (13 catches, 109 yards) became the first Gamecocks duo to post 100-yard receiving games on the same night in four years.
Still the team, as a team, needs to step up their level of play as three very important games are coming up with the Vols, the Razorbacks and what could be for the SEC East crown at the Swamp.
The defense improved slightly but still needs to get more aggressive in the secondary. The line play was good but still it is frustrating to see what a mobile qb can do against USC. Glad no more of those are coming up on the slate of games.
Carolina can celebrate the win, get the monkey of their back, high-five Garcia for good play but now it is time to get better as a unit. The Vols, even if they suck, will not be easy and a little tougher than the ‘Dores. They have a better run game so the defense will have to shut it down. Well, we can talk UT later on. For now, enjoy the win as a “win is a win.”
