The USC Gamecocks will defend the College Football Belt against the Clemson Tigers on Saturday. This will be USC’s second defense of the belt since earning it with the Florida Gators win.
You could be like me and you find yourself asking “what the heck is the college football belt?” I must say, it is because of our pals at garnetandblackattack.com that this came across our radar. We read up on the belt and now desire to see USC defend it against the hated Tigers.
Think of wrestling and to be the man you have to beat the man. Another words since a group of guys thought this up and awarded the first college football belt championship to the Nebraska Cornhuskers on Jan. 1, 1972, the belt has traveled around the college football world. (See a list of how it has gotten around over the years.) To win the belt you have to defeat the team that has it. Make sense? No actual “belt” changes hands but it does make a lot of sense, at least more than the BCS right? If you still do not understand – read this.
South Carolina is 6-6 in belt games. This is the second time USC has held the belt this season as the Alabama win got them the belt earlier in 2010.
So the belt is on the line in Death Valley and another reason to win this game if there was not already enough for USC. Oh and let that TigerBurn baby!
