The Red Sox headed down to Camden Yards to play a few games against the Orioles, who are still in the hunt for the post season and possibly to win the AL East. The Sox can play spoiler to either the O’s or the Yanks, depending on how these games go.
Aaron Cook took the mound for the Sox and didn’t last very long. The Sox took a quick lead when Scott Podsednik got a bunt single and then he scored on a sac fly from Pedroia. Sox 1-0. That would be the only hit that the Sox would get against the O’s. Cook took the mound and gave the lead right back to the Os and then some. Cook gave up a 2 run HR to Davis and then a grand slam to Flaherty to give the Orioles a 6-1 lead. Cook gave up 2 walks to start the 2nd inning and Bobby V had seen enough. Alfredo Aceves was in the game with 2 men on base and no outs. Aceves got a double play and a groundout to get out of the inning without any more damage. Aceves also pitched himself out of a jam in the 3rd inning when he balked Thome to 3rd with no outs. Aceves got the 3 outs he needed without allowing Thome to score. Aceves pitched himself a scoreless 4th, but would find trouble in the 5th inning. With 2 outs, Aceves gave up RBI doubles to Machado and Flaherty followed by an RBI single to Teagarden. Sox 9-1. Aceves was done for the night and Pedro Beato came in and got the final out of the inning. Beato pitched himself scoreless 6th and 7th innings while the Sox offense continued to be unable to get anything going against Tillman. Bard pitched himself a scoreless 8th inning with only one walk in there.
The Sox would have been no hit by the O’s if it had not been for Podsednik’s bunt single in the first inning. It looks like the Yankees will win tonight, so the O’s will still be one game behind them in the hunt for winning the AL East. The Sox will definitely be a part of figuring who is headed to the post season, just not in the way we thought when the season started.
Red Sox 1 Orioles 9 BOXSCORE
