Sox Bat Around Against Tanaka in Easy Win

This weekend seems to be about anything and everything to do with Derek Jeter and his last few days of baseball, however the Sox lineup and Joe Kelly decided to play and win a ballgame anyways.  Tanaka tanked and didn’t even make it out of the 2nd inning and the Sox bats ran away with this one.  Derek Jeter might have gotten a standing ovation during his at bats, but that wasn’t able to get his team the win or to allow them to be playing baseball after Sunday either.

Joe Kelly has been trying to use the 2nd half of his season since being traded to the Sox for John Lackey as an audition to be a crucial part of the rotation in 2015.  Kelly put in a fine performance yesterday and continued to show why he should be kicking around in 2015.  Kelly didn’t have any real trouble until the 8th inning and unfortunately for him he was unable to get a complete games against the Yankees.

The Red Sox offense on the other hand was active early and often in the game.  The Sox scored a single run in the 1st inning when Cespedes hit an RBI single to score Mookie Betts.  Sox 1-0.  It was the 2nd inning when the whole game broke wide open.  Tanaka wasn’t able to get through the mostly minor leaguers in the Sox lineup.  I wonder if the Yankees are really really certain that he is healthy.  The Sox sent 14 batters to the plate in the inning and ended up scoring 8 runs.  The runs scored when Vazquez hit an RBI single, Nava hit a 2 run RBI single, Cespedes hit an RBI single, Craig got to 2nd safely on an error and two runs scored, Cecchini hit an RBI double and then Castillo finished the inning off with an RBI single.  Wowza.  It felt like the inning was never gonna end and it was a great feeling!  Sox 9-0.  The Sox chased Tanaka and at least were showcasing some of the young kids who hope to get a chance to play in 2015.

All while this was happening Joe Kelly just kept pitching scoreless innings on the other side.  He was looking like someone who belongs in our rotation going forward.  In the 6th the Sox gave Kelly his 10th run to work with when Nava hit an RBI single.  Sox 10-0.  Kelly didn’t give up his first run until the 7th inning when he gave up a sac fly to Ryan to score Pirela from 3rd.  Sox 10-1.  Kelly went back out in the 8th inning, but he would end up finding trouble for the first time in the game and wouldn’t get to finish it.  Kelly ended up allowing the bases to be loaded with one out and then allowed a run to come home when he gave up an RBI single to Young.  Sox 10-2.  Kelly was done for the night and Tommy Layne was in hoping to get the last 2 outs to end the inning.  Layne wasn’t able to get it done and gave up a ground rule double to Drew to have the Yankees now down 4-10.  Layne was out and Rubby De La Rosa was in the game looking for those 2 outs.  De La Rosa looked sharp out of the pen and got the 2 outs in the inning.  Rubby also pitched a scoreless 9th inning and helped the Sox coast to an easy victory against Derek Jeter and the Yankees.

Red Sox 10  Yankees 4  BOXSCORE
