The Red Sox lost the first two games of the series with the Jays and if they lost last night, they’d still be 3 games away from clinching and would have been swept by the worst team in the AL East. The Sox went down early when Rick Porcello stumbled out of the gate, but the Sox offense got going and put the team back in front. The Sox were able to get the win to move their magic number to 2. The Yankees won last night, so they didn’t help us out there. The Sox have a chance to clinch if the Sox win and the Yankees lose on Thursday night.
The Sox pitching once again put the Sox in an early hole. Porcello didn’t look good and he started the game off giving up an RBI double to Smoak and then a 2 run homer to Bautista. Sox 0-3. The Sox got one of those runs back in the bottom of the 1st when Ramirez hit a double and then Benintendi came home on a throwing error from the outfield. Sox 1-3. The Sox offense scored 3 times in the bottom of the 2nd to shockingly take the lead. Jackie Bradley Jr. hit an RBI groundout, Betts hit an RBI single and then Pedroia hit a single that upon review would turn into an RBI. Bogaerts made his way to the plate and he was called out by the home plate umpire, however Xander was emphatic that he was safe. The call was reviewed and Xander was correct. The Sox took the lead 4-3.
The lead didn’t last for long as Porcello gave up the tying run to the Jays with an RBI single to Morales. Sox 4-4. The Sox bats got right back after it in the bottom of the 3rd and would take back the lead, this time for good. Hanley Ramirez hit a no doubt solo home run to start the inning, Davis hit an RBI single and then Xander Bogaerts hit a 3 run homer to finish off the inning. Sox 9-4. Porcello came back out for the 4th and gave one of those runs right back to the Jays. Porcello gave up a solo home run to Barney to have the Sox leading 9-5. Porcello pitched a scoreless 5th and then got two outs in the 6th before Farrell went to get him. David Price would be in the game and once again he impressed. Price finished off the 6th and then struck out the side in the 7th. Price in the bullpen might just be the magic the Sox need in October. The Sox got one more run in the bottom of the 7th when Mitch Moreland hit a solo home run. Sox 10-5. Addison Reed came out for the 8th and pitched a scoreless frame. The Jays would end up getting two more runs in the top of the 9th with Brandon Workman on the mound. Workman would finish off the game by giving up a 2 run homer to Hernandez. Sox 10-7. Workman got the final out to get the Sox a much needed win.
