The Red Sox faced off with the Reds once again and this time they had Eduardo Rodriguez on the mound. ERod pitched a game and by the end of the game his ERA for September was an impressive 1.78. Rodriguez made the strong case that he should be in the starting rotation when the Sox head into October.
The Sox got on the board early when they scored a single run in the top of the 1st. Brock Holt hit a RBI sac fly to score Bogaerts from 3rd. Sox 1-0. On the other side of the rubber, Rodriguez took the one run of support and ran with it. The game was still 1-0 until the 6th inning much thanks to Eduardo Rodriguez. The Sox bats gave ERod some breathing room when Mitch Moreland hit a 3 run homer to have the Sox up 4-0. The Sox added another run in the 7th when Benintendi hit an RBI single. I am sure that felt great for Benny to hit an RBI in front of his home crowd. Sox 5-0.
Rodriguez headed back out for the 8th inning and was still pitching a dominant shutout. ERod got two outs in the 8th and then Farrell came out to get him in favor of Carson Smith. Rodriguez got a standing ovation by the many Sox fans in the crowd as he headed to the dugout. Smith got the final out of the 8th by way of the K to close the book on ERod’s outing. Rodriguez’s pitching line was 112 pitches, 7.2 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 2 BB and 6 Ks.
The top of the 9th ended up being historical as it was the first time a son pitched to a team managed by his father. Luke Farrell took to the mound with his father looking on in the opposing dugout. Farrell was a little wild and walked two batters, but he ended up pitching a scoreless inning. As Luke left the mound, both father and son quickly tipped their hats to one another. It was a nice moment within the game. Joe Kelly came out for the bottom of the 9th and while he walked two batters as well, he also struck out the side to end the game with a Sox win.
