The Red Sox and the Yankees were back at it again tonight…this time with Clay Buchholz and Hiroki Kuroda taking the mound. Buchholz hoped to build upon the nice start from Lester on Monday. The teams were playing in some pretty frigid conditions at Yankee Stadium.
The Sox gave Buchholz a lead before he even got to the mound. The Sox scored a single run in the 1st with an RBI single from Salty to score Nava. Sox 1-0. In the 2nd inning, a single from Victorino hit Kuroda in the finger. He stayed in the game, but Kuroda's location was definitely effected. Kuroda hit Bradley, walked Ellsbury and then hit Nava to bring their second run in. Sox 2-0. The Yanks pulled Kuroda and Cody Eppley was in the game in relief.
Eppley got out of the 2nd inning with a double play, but found trouble in the 3rd. Victorino hit an RBI single to score Saltalamacchia. Sox 3-0. Then Jackie Bradley Jr got his first MLB hit with an RBI single to bring Victorino home. Sox 4-0. Eppley was done for the night and Warren came into the game for the Yankees. Warren gave up a 2 run RBI single to Ellsbury to score Bradley Jr and Iglesias. Sox 6-0. After that, Warren settled down and pitched through the 8th for the Yankees. Warren gave up another run in the 6th with an RBI groundout to Pedroia. Sox 7-1. Warren did one thing for the Yankees, he helped Joe Girardi save the bullpen going forward.
Buchholz looked pretty good in his first outing in 2013. Buch pitched three scoreless innings before giving up a solo HR to Hafner in the 4th. That would be the only run that Buchholz would surrender. Buchholz kept cruising along after the HR and pitched through the 7th inning. Clay's line for the night was 7 IP, 6 H, 1 R, 2 BB, 4 Ks. It was just what the team needed and he left the mound with a 7-1 lead. Miller came out in the 8th and hit Ben Fransisco to start the inning. A couple of Sox were hit earlier in the game, so there was some mild discussion that it might have been retaliation, but I personally doubt it. Miller has never had great command and it just didn't seem like it to me. Miller got one out and he was out of the game and Alfredo Aceves was into the game. This was Aceves' first appearance in 2013 and it was not stellar. Aceves gave up a single to Youk and then a 3 run HR to Vernon Wells. Sox 7-4. Aceves is only valuable to the team if his pitching well overshadows his craziness. Hanrahan came on in the 9th for his first save situation with the Red Sox. Hanrahan gave up a single to Nunez and then put down the next 3 Yankees in order to notch his first save of the season.
Red Sox 7 Yankees 4 BOXSCORE
WP: Buchholz (1-0) LP: Kuroda (0-1) SV: Hanrahan (1)
