The All Star Break was over and the Sox were facing their rival in the Yankees. Felix Doubront, who has always pitched well against the Yankees was on the mound vs. the Yanks Andy Pettitte. Doubront has pitched well this season and he would continue this trend last night to grab his 7th win.
Doubront got a small lead right off the back when Jacoby Ellsbury hit his 4th HR of the season to give the Sox a 1-0 lead. The Sox jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the 2nd when Napoli walked and then Jonny Gomes hit a 2 run bomb to left field. Doubront hadn't given up a hit in the game until the 5th inning, but he ended up giving up a run in the 4th. Doubront walked Gardner and then Gardner started running all over the bases. He stole 2nd, stole 3rd and when Salty made a bad throw to 3rd he came home on the error. Sox 3-1. In the 5th inning the Yanks got their 2nd run when Stewart hit a double to score Overbay. Sox 3-2. The game was starting to feel very tight. In the bottom of the 5th Brett Gardner was K'ed by Dubi and then he proceeded to throw his bat and helmet and was ejected from the game. Doubront kept on pitching in the boiling heat into the 7th inning. He got Overbay to groundout for the first out of the inning and Farrell went to go get him. Doubront's pitching line for the night was 93 pitches, 6.1 IP, 2 R, 1 ER, 3 BB and 5 Ks. It was another tremendous outing from the lefty.
Junichi Tazawa took the mound to finish off the 7th. Taz walked the first batter he faced, but then retired the next two in order to end the inning. In the bottom of the 7th the Sox got an insurance run when Iglesias hit an RBI single to score Gomes. Sox 4-2. Craig Breslow pitched a scoreless 8th inning and handed the ball over to Koji Uehara in the 9th. Koji continued to impress as the Sox closer and had himself a nice 1-2-3 inning.
