Sox Brawl To Win Over O’s

I wasn’t even supposed to be at last night’s Red Sox game, but I ended up getting a half day off of work, so I hopped in my car and SHIPPED UP TO BOSTON.  What did this game have in store for me… well, I met and got a picture with Jarrod Saltamacchia…WIN…. I won #tweetyourseat from the Red Sox at the game….WIN…. saw the Sox score 8 runs in the 1st inning…..WIN ….saw Josh Beckett slip on the mound….LESS WIN ….then saw the benches cleared and saw Papi almost try to take Kevin Gregg’s head off….WIN ….and saw the Red Sox WIN and a take full game up on the Yankees….WIN!  All in all… a pretty good day for a game I wasn’t even supposed to be here for!

The game started off with a bang having the Sox score 8 runs in the 1st inning and chase the O’s starter, Britton, before he could record 3 outs.  Wowza.  In the middle of that monster inning David Ortiz hit a 3 run HR which will come into play later in the game.  Josh Beckett took the mound for the Sox and looked in control of the game (it’s hard not to when your team spots you a 8 run lead in the 1st) until the 5th inning when Beckett slipped on the mound.  The trainers came out and he seemed to be okay, but something was bothering him so he was taken out of the game after the 5th.  It was reported later that Beckett suffered a hyperextended knee on the slip and that he will be fine after a few days rest.  Phew.  We can’t have another starter go down.  Matt Albers and Dan Wheeler came out and pitched 3 innings of scoreless relief with the Sox leading 9-3 heading into the 8th inning.

That’s when it got interesting.  The Sox took a 10-3 lead on a Reddick RBI triple and then David Ortiz came to the plate.  Kevin Gregg was pitching for the O’s.  It is said Gregg didn’t like Papi’s slow trot on his HR in the first…. or so they say.  Or… that Gregg didn’t like that Papi swung on a 3-0 count when the Sox had such a huge lead….  Whatever the reason, Gregg threw up and in at Papi and after the 3rd throw, Papi took exception to it and stepped to him on the mound.  Benched cleared… be it calmly.  Then, Papi hit a pop fly and Gregg motioned and said something to him.  Papi charged at Gregg and it was on.  The benches cleared again and this time not so calmy.  Papi threw some punches and lucky for Gregg (and the Sox) they did not land.  After the chaos cleared, Ortiz, Saltalamacchia, Gregg and Johnson were ejected and we were on to the 9th.   Atchy pitched a scoreless inning and the Sox won with a beat down of the O’s off and on the field.
