The Red Sox had a ceremony last night celebrating the 10 year anniversary of the 2004 Red Sox Championship team. They brought out a lot of old, familiar faces and reminded us of when the Sox broke the Curse of the Bambino and finally brought a World Series back home to Boston. After the ceremony, the current Sox team took the field and were looking for their 3rd straight victory. John Lackey had the ball for the Sox and he continues to look like he might be the actual ace of the ball club.
The Red Sox got on the scoreboard first in the 2nd inning when Nava hit into a double play, but Gomes was still able to score from 3rd. Sox 1-0. The Sox grabbed another run in the 2nd inning when AJ Pierzynski hit an RBI single to score Bogaerts. Sox 2-0. In the bottom of the 6th the Sox went up 3-0 when Jackie Bradley Jr hit an RBI double to score Gomes. The final Sox run was scored in the bottom of the 7th when Gomes hit an RBI single to score Pedey. Sox 4-0.
While the Sox kept adding a run here or there, John Lackey was pitching an absolute gem. Lackey just looked dominant and kept the Braves lifeless during most of the game. Lackey took the mound in the 7th inning and it was the first time he showed any sign of struggle. Lack allowed two singles with one out and John Farrell came out to get him. Lackey clearly wanted to stay in the game and left begrudgingly. Lackey’s pitching line for the night was 105 pitches, 6.1 IP, 8 H, 0 R, 0 BB and 9 Ks.
Chris Capuano came out to finish off the 7th inning. Capuano got the 2nd out of the inning and then issued a walk to have the bases loaded. It was the first time there was a tense feeling in the ballpark. NESN showed Lackey watching with interest as the team and his win was in the balance. Capuano was able to get the final out of the inning by getting Freeman to groundout to 2nd. Phew. Junichi Tazawa took the mound in the 8th and had himself a nice 1-2-3 inning before handing the ball over to Craig Breslow in the 9th. Breslow allowed a leadoff single to start the inning, but then retired the next 3 batters in order to get the win. The Red Sox have now won 3 games a week for the first time this season and have guaranteed their first series win in a long, long time.
