The Red Sox came back from a road trip where they looking pretty horrible, both with pitching and hitting. They had their ace Jon Lester on the mound vs. Terry Francona’s Indians. Lester pitched like the ace he is and the offense was able to muster up enough to get him and the team the much needed win.
The Sox took a 1-0 in the 2nd inning when Grady Sizemore hit a ground rule double that brought Napoli to the plate. In the inning Indians’ pitcher Tomlin would end up having the bases loaded with no outs, but the Sox were unable to get more runs on the board. The Sox went up 3-0 in the 5th inning when David Ortiz hit his 15th HR of the season. I am not sure why Tito and the Indians pitched to him with 2 outs and 1st base open, but they did and Papi made them pay.
Lester had his first real hiccup of his outing in the top of the 6th when he gave up a 2 RBI single to Kipnis to give those runs right back. Sox 3-2. The good news is that the Sox bats went after the Indians bullpen in the bottom of the 6th and were once again up by 3 runs. Hagadone was in for the Tribe and Brock Holt made him pay with a 2 run RBI double to the Monster. Sox 5-2. Lester finished off the 7th inning and took the mound in the 8th. Lester got 2 outs in the 8th, but when he gave up a single to Kipnis it would be the end of his outing. Farrell came out to get him and then Tazawa got the needed K to end the inning. Lester did his job and then some. Lester’s pitching line for the night was 109 pitches, 7.2 IP, 8 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 1 BB and 4 Ks. Koji took the mound in the 9th and had his usual 1-2-3 inning to grab the save and the win for the Sox.
