The Red Sox had a chance to sweep the Jays yesterday and with Jon Lester on the mound, the chances looked good. Unfortunately Lester continued to not get any run support and took his 4th loss of the season. The Sox bats were cold and it didn’t help with Papi and Victorino being out of the lineup.
The Sox scored the first run of the game in the 2nd inning when Jackie Bradley Jr hit an RBI single to score Gomes. Unfortunately that would be the only run the Sox would be able to score for the entire game. The Blue Jays were able to tie the game in the bottom of the inning when Brett Lawrie hit a solo HR against Lester. The Jays took the lead in the 3rd when Cabrera hit an RBI double. Sox 1-2. The game stayed 1-2 for a while with Lester and Dickey both pitching well. The Sox had a chance to tie the game in the 7th when they had runners at 2nd and 3rd with one out, but neither Bradley or Ross were able to get the run across the plate. Lester allowed a couple more runs to score in the bottom of the 7th to basically put the game away. Lester gave up an RBI double to Lawrie and then a groundout RBI to Sierra. Sox 1-4. Lester’s line for the night was 122 pitches, 7 IP, 5 H, 4 R, 0 BB and 7 Ks.
Andrew Miller took the mound in the 8th and wasn’t able to have a scoreless inning. Miller gave up a single to Reyes and then Ross dropped a foul ball so that Cabrera could continue his at bat and hit a single to get Reyes to 3rd. Bautista hit an RBI single and Miller was done for the day. Burke Badenhop came into the game, but he wasn’t able to stop the bleeding. Badenhop gave up a 2 run RBI double to Encarnacion to have the Blue Jays now leading 7-1. The Sox bats weren’t able to do anything in the top of the 9th and they dropped the final game of the series.
