The Red Sox were honoring Johnny Pesky yesterday and having their annual Jimmy Fund Telethon, however they were unable to put a cherry on the top of the emotional day with a win. Aaron Cook did not have his best performance to date and with Doubront and Dice-K on their way back, this might be it for Cookie.
Cook took the mound and the game was scoreless until the 3rd inning when he gave up his first run with an RBI single to Albert Pujols. Sox 0-1. In the 4th, Cook gave up two more runs with an RBI single to Aybar and then an RBI single to Iannetta. Sox 0-3. In the 5th, Cook gave up a 2 run HR to Trumbo to give the Angels a 5-0 lead. It just wasn’t Cook’s night. Cook was done after 5 innings and his line for the night was 85 pitches, 5 IP, 11 hits, 5 R, 4 ER, 1 BB and 4 Ks.
The Sox offense didn’t get anything started until the 6th inning when Saltalamacchia hit his 21st homerun of the season. Sox 2-5. In the 7th, the Sox got their 3rd and final run when Santana threw a wild pitch and Scott Podsednik scored from 3rd base. Sox 3-5. Unfortunately, that would be it for the Sox.
The Sox bullpen did their job from the 5th inning on. Mortensen came on in the 6th and pitched 2 scoreless innings. Vicente Padilla who was just activated from the DL came on in the 8th and had himself a nice 1-2-3 inning. Alfredo Aceves came out in the 9th and also had a scoreless inning. Nice job by the bullpen however the starting pitcher once again just put the Sox in too big of a hole.
The Sox are currently 5 games under 500 and don’t look to be making a big run anytime soon.
Red Sox 3 Angels 5 BOXSCORE
