Sighs. I keep waiting for it to turn around. Keep waiting. Keep waiting. Today it was Tim Wakefield vs. AJ Burnett. We at least had a chance. However, Tim didn’t pitch well, Salty didn’t catch well, Crawford didn’t play left field well, Ellsbury is the only one who could get anything done at the plate and AJ Burnett actually pitched well. All in all…not our best day.
The Sox started off in a 2 run hole in the 1st inning. Wake’s knuckleball seemed to be all over the place and Salty was having passed ball after passed ball. In the 3rd, Wake walked ARod and gave up a 2 run HR to Jorge Posada. Sox down 4-0. Ells got the Sox on the board with a solo HR in the 4th. However, the Yanks got that run right back in the 5th and Wake was chased from the game. Wake was in a long LONG line of starting pitchers who couldn’t get out of the 5th inning. Except for Beckett, no other starter has been able to get out of the 5th inning at all. That’s makes it no surprise that the team can’t win games. Matt Albers came out in relief of Wake. He got the 2 outs to end the 5th inning. He gave up a run in the 6th inning, but all in all…still showing signs that Albers is returning to that guy we saw earlier in the season.
Ellsbury gave the Sox their 2nd run with another solo HR in the 6th. That was Ells’ 30th HR of the season. Congrats to him! Ells also scored his 100th RBI of the season. He is officially in the club of players who have 30 HRs and 30 stolen bases in a season. It’s too bad his teammates can’t take some of his spark and use it to help the brother along.
Scott Atchison came out in the 7th and 8th and pitched scoreless innings. He was going to pitch the 9th inning, but needed to leave because of an injury. They said after the game that it was a groin tweak and not serious. Still, he’s one of those consistent arms we could use in the pen. Andrew Miller came out and pitched the 9th. Miller only walked one batter and got out without any damage.
Still, Sox lose. Tampa wins. Now we only lead the WC by 1/2 game. If we lose tonight, we’ll be tied with Tampa. Gulp.
