Sox Error Their Way to a Loss

The Red Sox won in extras last night and hoped to be able to grab a win in 9 innings tonight.  Unfortunately, Dempster would get out pitched by the Twins Diamond and some poor defense behind him would lead to the Sox falling to the Twins.  Ross and Middlebrooks would also leave the game due to a collision for a pop up in foul territory, so let's cross our fingers that neither lose a significant amount of time.

Dempster pitched well, however Diamond just pitched better.  Dempster didn't give up a run until the 5th inning.  Dempster gave up a leadoff double to Doumit and then Doumit got to 3rd when the ump said Dempster balked.  I didn't see how it was a balk and from Dempster's reaction, neither did he.  This is the point of the game when Ross and Middlebrooks collided to get a ball in foul ground territory.  WMB held onto the ball and got the out and it seemed like a great play until it became clear both players were hurt.  Ross left the game immediately with a bruise right above his knee.  He is considered day to day.  Middlebrooks left the game after his next at bat and is having XRays on his right side.  *crossing fingers*

Dempster allowed the first run to score in the 5th when Ramirez hit an RBI single.  Sox 0-1.  In the 7th, Dempster would give up a solo HR to Doumit to give the Twins a 2-0 lead.  It's the 8th inning when everything went from bad to much much worse.  Pedro Ciriaco was in the game for Middlebrooks and had himself two errors in a row to begin the inning.  Dozier and Carroll both reached through error by Ciriaco.  That chased Dempster from the game  and Breslow was in.  Breslow gave up an RBI double to Mauer.  Sox 0-3.  Breslow then issued a walk and RBI singles to Mourneau and Plouffe.  Sox 0-5.  Breslow was out and Alex Wilson was in.  Wilson got the ground ball he wanted, but then there was a throwing error from Salty to 1st base to not get the double play done.  Farrell came out and emphatically complained that Doumit was clearly inside the line and should be called out.  Farrell looked like he really wanted to get tossed from this game, but the ump held his cool and wouldn't give it to him.  Sox 0-6.

As for the offense, there was really nothing to write about until the 9th inning.  Salty hit a leadoff homerun to at least put the Sox on the board.  Sox 1-6.  There wouldn't be anything else and this messy, sloppy game was over.

Red Sox 1  Twins 6  BOXSCORE

WP: Diamond (3-2)  LP: Dempster (2-3)
